How to get your own favicon - fast

This article will show you how to get a little picture to show up in your browser's address bar, or how to get the tiny icon to show up next to your site when its added to favorites. This also covers what to do about "File Not Found" errors in your error logs, such as this one:

[Thu Mar 13 18:45:34 2008] [error] [client] File does not exist: /home/username/public_html/favicon.ico

Start with a square picture, 48x48 pixels square works well.  Make sure the design is fairly simple -- its going to be shrunk down signficantly, so if you can't tell what it is while squinting, simplify some more.  Once you're done, upload your icon image here:

This site will take your image and convert it into an .ico file, with options for making icons up to 48 pixels square, in case your user adds your site as a desktop shortcut.   Save the favico.ico file it generates, and upload it to your website inside the public_html directory.  That's it!

Want a different icon for another directory?  Simply upload your new favicon to -that- directory.

These changes may take some time to take effect, but only on your own computer.  Your browser's cache may need to be cleared. You might try testing on another system if you're having trouble viewing your favico.  But if nothing else, simply wait a few days and your browser will update the icon itself.

Want more control over your icon?  Need to edit pixels?  Google "Icon maker software" or any phrase like that online to find a huge list of results.  Enjoy!
